Symmetry breaking of the flow in a cylinder driven by a rotating end wall

چکیده
The flow driven by a rotating end wall in a cylindrical container with aspect ratio H/R52.5 is time dependent for Reynolds numbers Re5VR/n.2700. For Reynolds numbers up to 4000 three solution branches have been identified, and we examine a solution on each one. At Re53000, the flow is axisymmetric and time periodic. At Re53500, the flow is quasiperiodic with a low-frequency modulation and supports a modulated rotating wave with azimuthal wave number k55. At Re54000, the flow is time periodic with a qualitatively different mode of oscillation to that at Re53500. It also supports a modulated rotating wave, with k56. The peak kinetic energy of the nonaxisymmetric modes is associated with the jet-like azimuthal flow in the interior. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~00!00311-1#

Nonlinear vortex development in rotating flows.
We present the results of a combined experimental and numerical investigation into steady secondary vortex flows confined between two concentric right circular cylinders. When the flow is driven by the symmetric rotation of both end walls and the inner cylinder, toroidal vortex structures arise through the creation of stagnation points (in the meridional plane) at the inner bounding cylinder or...
متن کاملAxi-symmetric Stagnation–Point Flow and Heat Transfer Obliquely Impinging on a Rotating Circular Cylinder
Laminar stagnation flow, axi-symmetrically yet obliquely impinging on a rotating circular cylinder, as well as its heat transfer is formulated as an exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Rotational velocity of the cylinder is time-dependent while the surface transpiration is uniform and steady. The impinging stream is composed of a rotational axial flow superposed onto irrotational rad...
متن کاملA Numerical Study on the Aeroacoustic Radiation from a Finite Length Rotating Cylinder
Rotating cylinders have wide applications in different areas, especially the aerodynamic area. However, the acoustic behaviors of these components have not been widely studied. The generating noise from a spinning cylinder is mainly due to the detached vortices from the leeward of the body. In this study, the large eddy simulation technique is used to simulate the flow field over a three-dimens...
متن کاملUnsteady swirling flow in an enclosed cylinder with reflectional symmetry
A numerical investigation of the multiple stable solutions found in confined swirling flows is presented. The flows consist of fluid in a completely filled cylinder driven by the constant corotation of the two end walls. When reflectional symmetry at the cylinder half-plane is imposed, the flow corresponds to that in a cylinder of half the height driven by the bottom end wall, with the top surf...

A new approach to calculate the axially symmetric binary gas flow is proposed Dalton’s law for partial pressures contributed by each species of a binary gas mixture (argon and helium) is incorporated into numerical simulation of rarefied axially symmetric flow inside a rotating cylinder using the time relaxed Monte-Carlo (TRMC) scheme and the direct simulation Monte-Carlo (DSMC) method. The res...
